In 2018 KFC sought out to refresh its brand across the nation. With an inspiration design built, Yum Brands and Lendlease partnered together to update nearly 2,500 KFC locations. Lendlease enlisted Interplan, based on its previous experience with Interplan on high paced, nationwide rebrand roll-outs, and the trust it’s gained through those experiences.
Interplan worked closely with Lendlease and the KFC companies to develop formulaic plan sets that could be used as a basis. Since each KFC location was slightly different, despite having prototypes with similar floor plans, every store location had its differences.
“There was nothing cookie cutter here.” exclaims the Project Architect, Greg Faucher with Interplan. The majority of the effort was in the rigorous, detail oriented comparison and review between the unique site conditions at each store location, and the KFC’s refreshed brand guidelines, in order to inform the design.
Then there was compliance. Many of the stores were a couple decades old, so we had a lot of challenges with adapting the current codes into the very tight existing designs. “But it was fun,” said Greg.“ This was the type of program that wasn’t overwhelmingly large, but still took a good amount of forward thinking and problem solving to get it done right.”
